Building the Foundations for Legal Innovation and Tech Adoption

Lexpo is the premier Continental European event dedicated to reshaping the future of the legal industry through innovation and (legal) technology. Hosted in Amsterdam, Lexpo’25 is designed for forward-thinking law firms and in-house legal teams ready to embrace the next wave of legal transformation.

The promise of legal technology and artificial intelligence is undeniable, offering new ways to enhance efficiency, streamline operations, and improve decision-making. But true digital transformation goes beyond simply implementing new tools. Without solid core systems, a well-structured information architecture, and a clear strategy for managing change, even the most advanced solutions can fail to deliver real impact.

This is exactly what Lexpo’25 focuses on—helping legal professionals build the foundation, structure, and strategic alignment needed for meaningful, sustainable innovation.

Dutch Bar Association

Dutch lawyers have the opportunity to earn points at Lexpo, contributing to the professional development requirements set by the Dutch Bar Association (Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten, NOvA). It's important to note that lawyers can earn 1 PO-point for every hour spent attending sessions at Lexpo, excluding any breaks. To ensure points are properly accredited, all participants must sign in upon arrival and sign out when leaving. Following the event, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued to all attendees.

The NOvA recognizes that lawyers are best positioned to determine which sessions at Lexpo enhance their professional competence. Thus, they have the autonomy to select sessions that align with their ongoing professional development needs.

Back to Basics - Optimising Core Systems

Back to BasicsSuccess begins with mastering core systems, whether you’re a law firm managing complex client matters or an in-house legal department supporting broader organisational objectives.

For law firms, core systems such as Document Management Systems (DMS), Practice Management Systems (PMS), and Client Relationship Management (CRM) tools play a central role in operations. These systems are essential for storing vital data, tracking workflows, and managing client relationships. Despite their importance, many firms struggle with fragmented or outdated systems, which can lead to inefficiencies and missed opportunities.

Similarly, in-house legal teams rely on foundational tools to support their operations. Systems like DMS for managing contracts and policies, Matter or Case Management Systems (CMS) for tracking tasks and budgets, and Legal Spend Management solutions for overseeing costs and vendor relationships are crucial. When these tools are optimised, in-house legal departments can streamline processes and provide greater value to their organisations.

Lexpo’25 will provide attendees with insights on how to evaluate and improve these systems effectively. Discussions will cover essential factors, including the choice between on-premises and cloud-based deployment, scalability, security, and cost-efficiency. This guidance will help law firms and in-house legal teams align their technology with their strategic objectives.

Building a Strong Information Architecture

Information ArchitectureWith core systems in place, the next critical challenge is establishing a seamless flow of data across the organisation. A well-designed information architecture acts as the backbone of collaboration, compliance, and strategic decision-making, empowering organisations to unlock the full potential of their data.

Disorganised or siloed data can lead to inefficiencies, unreliable insights, and increased compliance risks, hindering overall growth. At Lexpo'25, participants will explore practical approaches to designing an information architecture that ensures data is clean, consistent, and interoperable. This robust structure not only facilitates the integration of core systems but also provides a solid foundation for adopting cutting-edge technologies such as AI and automation.

Attendees will discover how to future-proof their data infrastructure, enabling scalability as both their organisations and data volumes expand. Sessions will delve into best practices for aligning data governance frameworks with business objectives, ensuring that data remains accessible, secure, and actionable.

By mastering the principles of a strong information architecture, participants will be equipped to drive innovation, mitigate risks, and enhance organisational agility, creating a competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Making Change Happen: Strategic Alignment and Best Practices in Change Management

Making Change HappenTechnology is transforming the legal profession, redefining competitive advantages, and reshaping client expectations. For law firms, this evolution demands staying ahead in a competitive market by delivering superior client services and embracing operational efficiencies. In-house legal departments, meanwhile, are leveraging technology to manage growing workloads, control costs, and align more effectively with broader organizational goals.

At Lexpo'25, legal innovation and operations experts will showcase the critical importance of a strategic approach to designing technology journeys. To maximize the return on investment in legaltech or operational technology, organizations must break down departmental silos and align technology initiatives with the overall strategy of the firm or company. Law firm innovators must ensure that their efforts resonate with client and market strategies, while legal operations champions should ground their initiatives in both their company’s broader objectives and their department’s specific priorities.

Acknowledging that successful technology adoption extends beyond tools to the people driving and impacted by the change, Lexpo’25 will explore best practices in change management. Attendees will gain actionable insights into overcoming resistance to change, managing costs, and achieving seamless technical integration. By combining strategic foresight with proven change management methodologies, Lexpo’25 will empower law firms and in-house legal teams to navigate the complexities of modern legal technology adoption and excel in a rapidly evolving industry.

Leveraging Legal Technology and Artificial Intelligence for Enhanced Innovation and Efficiency

Making Change HappenWith core systems optimised, a robust information architecture in place, and effective change management strategies implemented, law firms and in-house legal teams are ready to unlock the full potential of advanced legal technology and artificial intelligence. However, successful adoption goes beyond just implementing new tools—it requires a strategic approach that ensures these innovations deliver real, measurable value.

At Lexpo’25, industry experts will showcase how cutting-edge legaltech and AI-driven solutions can drive efficiency, enhance decision-making, and improve client service. Law firms can gain a competitive edge by automating routine tasks, leveraging AI for legal research and contract analysis, and using data-driven insights to make informed business decisions. In-house legal teams, on the other hand, can harness these technologies to streamline workflows, control costs, and align more effectively with broader organisational goals.

However, to truly reap the benefits of AI and legal technology, firms must navigate challenges such as cost management, integration complexity, security concerns, and interoperability with existing systems. Lexpo’25 will provide attendees with practical insights and strategies to ensure their organisations can effectively implement, scale, and optimise these innovations.

By attending Lexpo’25, legal professionals will learn to leverage AI and legaltech for long-term success, ensuring they remain adaptable, competitive, and future-ready in an evolving legal landscape.

Driving Legal Innovation — From Vision to AI-Driven Impact

Legal professionals are known for their precision, analytical mindset, and commitment to excellence, qualities that ensure accuracy and reduce risk. However, these same strengths can also resist change, making innovation and adaptation within law firms and in-house legal departments particularly challenging. How can legal teams balance their need for caution with the agility required to embrace new working methods?

In this keynote, Marloes ter Huurne - author of Het Advocatenbrein. Psychologie voor juristen (The Lawyer's Brain: Psychology for Lawyers) - will share her research on how legal professionals think, learn, and work together. She will explore the psychological and cognitive traits that shape their approach to problem-solving and decision-making, revealing how these insights can be used to foster a culture of innovation.

This session provides valuable takeaways for senior management and business leaders on change management in the legal industry. Understanding how lawyers process new information, handle uncertainty, and collaborate can help leaders introduce change more effectively, whether adopting new technology, restructuring work processes, or encouraging more open knowledge-sharing.

Through an interactive discussion, Ter Huurne will address key questions, such as:

  • How can legal professionals learn more effectively from their work and each other?
  • What strategies can firms use to reduce resistance to change and create an environment where lawyers feel comfortable taking calculated risks?
  • How can non-lawyer leaders translate psychological insights into practical management approaches that support innovation?
  • What does it take to build a culture where differences of opinion fuel progress rather than stagnation?

This keynote will equip legal professionals and business leaders with science-backed strategies for building a more adaptive, innovative, and high-performing legal workplace.

Traditional Law Firm Technology in the Age of AI: Core Systems Still Matter

As Artificial Intelligence captures headlines and budgets, it’s easy to overlook the importance of the core systems that legal teams rely on every day — including Practice Management Systems (PMS), Case Management Systems (CMS), and Document Management Systems (DMS).

While AI promises transformation, these foundational platforms remain critical to delivering legal services. But how fit for purpose are they today? And how can legal teams ensure these systems continue to support — rather than hinder — progress?

This session explores how firms and legal departments can get more from their core systems in an environment increasingly shaped by emerging technologies. It will also consider how to align traditional platforms with modern expectations for usability, integration, and strategic value.

We will discuss:

  • What do we mean by “traditional” law firm technology today?
  • What role do PMS, CMS, and DMS play in enabling or limiting change?
  • How are vendors reacting to the challenges of the AI revolution?
  • What should legal teams expect from traditional solution vendors?
  • How can core systems shift from being costly infrastructure to enabling strategic value?
