AI Skills Development to Shape the Future of Africa’s Legal Landscape
Other News

Afriwise logoThe global legal industry is on the cusp of a revolution, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) innovations poised to transform how legal services are delivered and consumed. AI-led advancements, projected to grow over 30% by 2031 (2024-2031 Global LegalTech AI Report), are reshaping everything from legal research to contract analysis and compliance monitoring.

In Africa, AI could catalyze economic growth worth $2.9 trillion by 2030 (GSMA AI4D Africa Report), addressing systemic inequalities while fostering skills development and entrepreneurial opportunities. Central to this transformation is the creation of Afrocentric AI to overcome biases inherent in Western-centric data. Gérald Croonenberghs, Managing Director of Silikin Village, emphasizes the importance of localizing data to ensure accurate, culturally relevant AI solutions.

The challenge of Africa’s unstructured legal data ecosystem is significant, with over 90% of global legal data currently inaccessible without AI. Steven De Backer, CEO of Afriwise, highlights the need for secure, trusted African datasets to meet the growing demand for quick and accurate legal insights.

To bridge this gap, Afriwise has partnered with TEXAF, a DRC-based company, to develop local AI-driven legal tech solutions. This collaboration, supported by Silikin Village’s entrepreneurial hub, focuses on training local talent and fostering grassroots innovations. With 60% of the DRC’s population under 25, the potential for young Congolese professionals to lead AI-driven legal transformation is immense.

“Legal and regulatory intelligence is not just a tool but a necessity to empower Africa’s legal systems,” says De Backer. Through partnerships and investment in local talent, Africa is building a future where AI transforms legal services and drives economic growth.

For Africa, this initiative is not just about technology—it is about empowerment and laying the foundation for a more inclusive, innovative legal ecosystem.
