Ponemon and AccessData Study Reveals Significant Concerns around Mobile E-Discovery and Data Investigations

AccessData and the Ponemon Institute today released new findings focused on the investigation of data and security incidents involving mobile devices and e-discovery operations. The survey, sponsored by AccessData, the leader in incident resolution solutions, surveyed CISOs and security technicians in the United States and EMEA on their organization’s ability to manage mobile investigations.

The respondents shared growing concerns that mobile e-discovery and mobile analysis when tied to a company’s breach investigation was a difficult process. Key findings revealed:

• Over half of the respondents were either unable or unsure of how to conduct e-discovery analysis on mobile devices
• Half of the respondents were unable or unsure of how to locate sensitive data such as trade secrets and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) on mobile devices
• Nearly two-thirds of organizations’ security teams are involved with e-discovery operations
• Over three quarters of respondents said they would find value in a combined security, internal investigations and e-discovery platform that work seamlessly across their business units

“With the rise in mobile device usage, an increasingly mobile workforce and BYOD, mobile data is now a crucial source of e-discovery evidence for security and legal departments,” said Craig Carpenter, Chief Cybersecurity Strategist at AccessData. “Mobile information found in applications, SMS texts, images, log files and geo-location data are critical to getting a better understanding of an entire data incident or investigation. Without the ability to quickly collect and analyze mobile ESI, legal, InfoSec and IT departments will not be able to effectively manage investigations and litigation.”
