Clients Demand that Lawyers get Certified…in Legal Technology
Global News

LTC$ logoThe Legal Technology Core Competencies Certification Coalition (LTC4™) is pleased to recognize several significant milestones in its growth. “LTC4’s mission is to ‘Improve legal practice efficiency via better use of technology’”, says founding member Bonnie Beuth from Ford & Harrison LLP.

LTC4 is a not-for-profit group and currently has over 65 law firm and legal department members. The members, who come from the USA, Canada and Europe, have contributed their many years of expertise to establish industry standard core competencies for legal technology. The core competencies lead to a certification for both individuals and firms which is recognized internationally.

Beuth continues, “The launch of the LTC4 website opens up membership to all firms and legal departments. Over 60 firms have pooled their skills to establish an unprecedented body of collective knowledge which is now available to members.”

Organizations join the group by paying an annual subscription fee. This fee is on a sliding scale depending on the size of the organization. All members gain access to the Core Competencies, member-only events, a members-only forum, and best practice guidelines for implementing a successful up-skilling and LTC4 Certification program.

The Core Competency Learning Plans currently available are:

  • Legal Documents
  • Document and Email Management
  • Collaborating With Others
  • Road Warrior
  • Time and Billing
  • Data, Reports and Exhibits
  • Presentations and Visual Communications
  • Client Relationship Management
  • Security

Core Competency Learning Plans currently being developed are New Business Intake and Conflicts Checking; e-Discovery/Practice Support; and HIPAA.

Jodie Carman from Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt says “Members take the Core Competency Learning Plans and can tailor them to incorporate their best practices. Essentially, LTC4 is providing a foundation for members to create core competency programs, which they can use to increase the skill level of attorneys and staff.”

Beuth explains how the LTC4 certification process works: “Firms can use any valid training and knowledge checking method. This can be their current training and knowledge checking approach and/or suitable third party material. LTC4 provides independent external consultants who approve a firm’s internal process and certify both individuals and firms. Member firms will be able to use this certification to their competitive advantage when replying to RFP’s and to prove efficiency when faced with questions about billable hours. Law firms are looking to differentiate themselves and this Certification does just that.”

Clients now demand technical efficiency from their outside counsel and are asking for LTC4 certified lawyers and staff.
