Questio Delivers $3.1 Million in Savings on One Case for a Fortune 10 Energy Company
UnitedLex, a global service provider of technology-powered legal and business solutions, today announced that its Questio™ managed eDiscovery service has saved law firms and corporations more than $20 million since its September 2013 launch.
The consultant-led, technology-enabled service has been used by more than 20 law firms and 33 corporations on more than 301 legal matters to significantly reduce data volumes and eDiscovery costs.
On average, Questio has helped clients save more than 50% on total litigation costs by eliminating up to 80% of non-responsive data volumes prior to processing. In this way, law firms and corporations can materially reduce the financial risk of high production and storage costs for long-term or data-intensive legal matters. UnitedLex estimates that Questio users can save more than $2 in downstream costs for each document eliminated, and achieve a six- to seven-figure cost savings for a typical data collection of 1 terabyte.
“Case after case, Questio has proven its value to our clients—not only by collectively saving them more than $20 million in eDiscovery costs, but also by enabling them to develop their litigation strategies faster by focusing on only the most relevant data and documents,” said Dave Deppe, President, UnitedLex. “Questio’s ability to effectively eliminate non-responsive data earlier in the eDiscovery process greatly reduces the time, cost and complexity of litigation. After its highly successful first year, we realize that Questio has barely scratched the surface in terms of the eDiscovery time and cost savings that can be achieved by law firms and corporate counsel.”
Questio pairs legal experts with proprietary technology, targeted automation and data analysis tools to intelligently reduce large volumes of non-responsive data and identify matter-specific data faster and more efficiently. This process mitigates the inherent judicial and economic risks associated with large volumes of data throughout all subsequent stages in the eDiscovery lifecycle.
For example, a Fortune 10 energy company was facing a warranty dispute related to underwater drilling equipment after the plaintiffs alleged that proper maintenance procedures and documentation had not been provided at time of sale. UnitedLex’s Questio consultants collaborated closely with inside counsel to perform communication and file-type analysis against a large data set collected from the US and EU, and immediately eliminated 1TB of custodial data. Further refinement of the search criteria enabled them to reduce the remaining 950,000 documents (totaling 662GB) to only 35,000 (totaling 23 GB) through Questio’s unique ability to view documents within the application prior to promotion. In one week’s time, the small, specialized review team coded more than 95% of the remaining documents as relevant. By eliminating more than 1.2 TB of data prior to review, Questio achieved a cost reduction of more than 99%—or $3.1 million in savings—on data storage, processing and document review costs.
“As the cost of eDiscovery continues to rise unabated due to the exponential increase in data volume, the argument for Questio’s data elimination capabilities becomes much stronger – especially for cases that exceed 1 terabyte of data,” said Deppe. “While cost savings is always paramount, the beauty of Questio lies in its ability to quickly deliver actionable intelligence to legal teams, making it more of a strategic asset than a cost-cutting tool.”
