Today ThreadKM launches its legal knowledge management platform, designed to dramatically slim down email boxes, improve communications, and simplify project management for legal teams. While the idea of “collaborative spaces” isn’t new, many law firms have struggled to gain traction with generic software solutions, leaving attorneys stuck on email.
“We’re solving the two biggest problems facing law firms and legal departments: too much email and not enough project management,” said CEO Dan Hauck, a former Bryan Cave attorney.
ThreadKM is the first company to introduce matter-centric “team chat” for legal teams to discuss, share ideas, files, and more in real-time without creating more email clutter.
“Every law firm talks about collaboration, but most have no real solution apart from email,” explained Hauck. “Matter-centric team chat - or ‘firm chat’ - is a huge innovation. It’s unlike anything law firms have used before.” The concept of team chat has exploded in popularity over the past couple years, thanks to applications like Slack and Hipchat. ThreadKM recognized that a similar solution would work for the legal industry.
“Managing email is the number one complaint inside of law firms: it’s stressful, time-consuming, and not billable.” Hauck said. “So we asked ourselves, how can we help legal teams collaborate, move knowledge and documents quickly between colleagues, and ultimately be happier and more productive? That’s the genesis of ThreadKM.”
ThreadKM also introduces an agile project management solution, called “kanban,” to help lawyers keep track of each matter. Kanban is already popular with consultants, software developers, and other knowledge workers because of its ease-of-use and flexibility on fluid projects. Lawyers are starting to catch on, and ThreadKM expects to accelerate that trend. Using a virtual “board,” lawyers can quickly plan matters, assign tasks, and track progress as each matter develops.
The entire platform was built for the specific needs of law firms, meaning integration and security are core principles of ThreadKM. “We understand the law firm customer,” said CTO Dedrick Duckett. “ThreadKM already integrates with popular tools like iManage and Active Directory for large firms, and Clio for smaller firms. We’re expanding our integrations every day.” ThreadKM also offers a variety of deployment options, including both on-premises and cloud-based solutions.
New law firms are signing up through the company’s website every week. “We’ve received a tremendous amount of interest from law firms and corporate legal departments trying to wrangle control over email and project management issues. And we expect to complete on-premises deployments with several firms this year,” said Hauck.
ThreadKM will have a prominent role at the International Legal Technology Association’s annual convention - known as ILTACON - later this month. In addition to exhibiting, ThreadKM is the featured “Hands On” presentation, giving members an opportunity to experience team chat and kanban for themselves during an interactive session on Sept. 3.
