AmLaw 100 firm Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton has partnered with judicial analytics company Gavelytics to provide the firm’s lawyers with unprecedented access to critical background information and actionable insights on civil trial court judges.
Launched in 2017, Gavelytics uses artificial intelligence to identify and visualize patterns and tendencies in judicial decision-making.
“Sheppard Mullin’s partnership with Gavelytics empowers our litigators with a dynamic new tool to quickly and effectively gather critical information on the judges assigned to our clients’ matters, helping them make knowledgeable decisions which informs litigation strategy,” said Martin Korn, director of research and knowledge services at Sheppard Mullin. “We are excited to initially deploy this innovative technology in our San Francisco and Los Angeles offices, and look forward to utilizing judicial analytics to manage calendar expectations, reduce research time and ultimately obtain successful outcomes for our clients.”
The Gavelytics platform provides critical insights into judges’ behavior such as: propensity for favoring plaintiffs or defendants; how they are inclined to rule on pivotal motions; judicial workload; contact information and courtroom rules; and pre-bench career. The Los Angeles-based company recently expanded the platform with the addition of a comprehensive ruling database, allowing attorneys to dig even deeper and gain a more complete understanding of a given judge’s style, preferences and legal writing and analysis.

The announcement continues the significant momentum that Gavelytics has enjoyed since its launch in September 2017, as it has steadily expanded both its geographical footprint and product features. Earlier this month, the company rolled out two new search features: arulings database and arbitrator archive. The company also announced the extension of its coverage into San Francisco County Superior Court, the legal epicenter of one of the most significant business and technology markets in the world. Earlier this year, the legal tech startup announced it closed a second seed round of funding totaling $3.2 million. The company has raised a total of $5.7 million since 2016.
