Lexicon, a law firm practice management technology and services provider, collaborating with Cancer for College, has awarded a $25,000 college scholarship.
The monetary award signifies the most significant individual scholarship that Cancer for College has granted with a sponsor for a single year.
The Lexicon Services Legal Scholarship was created to help the recipient realize their dream of earning a law degree. The recipient, Elizabeth Dia, who will become the first lawyer in her family, incurred a sizable impact on the savings that she set aside for law school tuition to pay for medical treatments.
The Lexicon Services Legal Scholarship will assist Ms. Dia in pursuing her dreams when she begins attending New York University School of Law in the fall of 2021. She plans to focus her law practice on immigrants and civil rights, with her goal to use her legal education to become involved in policy and legislative advocacy so that she can make a significant impact on our society.
“Cancer took many things from me that I will never get back,” said Dia. “My cancer journey will never be ‘over’, but I am excited that this new chapter in my life will include attending law school and being an activist for others.”
Five thousand people aged 15-19 will be diagnosed with cancer this year, with one in 100 current college students being cancer survivors.
“The scholarship was created to help counterbalance the financial devastation that a student and their family encounters while battling cancer.” Lexicon Chief Marketing Officer Jerome Elenez said. “Lexicon is proud to be a part of helping law school students’ dreams become a reality. We anticipate a bright legal future from this promising attorney, and we are happy to have her as the first recipient of the Lexicon Services Legal Scholarship.”
"We understand how expensive it is to deal with the costs of treatment to battle cancer," said Greg Flores, Cancer for College Executive Director. "To add the cost of not only college but law school to this is substantial. We want to help students like Elizabeth thrive through school and beyond. We are proud to partner with a great company like Lexicon to support law students in their endeavor to make a difference in the world."
Since 1993, Cancer for College has been providing need-based college scholarships and educational experiences to cancer survivors. The organization has granted more than 1,400 scholarships awarding more than $4 million to survivors around the country. Lexicon’s partnership with the charity beginning in 2020 highlights its corporate goal to expand its impact and contribute to a larger community need.
