Capensys Ltd. and LTC4 TM** - a coalition of leading law firms - announced today the successful culmination of over two years of collaboration to establish a set of legal technology core competencies. The goal was to create legal technology core competency standards, to provide a means of up-skilling and certifying users in the main workflows in law firms. Capensys has developed associated training materials to support this goal.
Law firms are increasingly faced with justifying to clients the billable time spent by partners, associates and support staff on matters, or are being asked to complete matters within a fixed fee arrangement. If law firm users are not sufficiently skilled in the technology that supports their workflows, it creates inefficiencies and increased billable hours.
“When firms are asked to justify every hour billed on a matter, they need to make sure those hours are efficient. By requiring staff to be certified in a set of law-firm-approved core technology competencies, it reassures clients that their chosen law firm has the most suitable skillset for dealing with their matters. It also reassures firms that their staff is 'up-to-the-job',” says Capensys Director Sue Pasfield. “It became apparent there was a need to establish industry-wide core technology competencies, which was why two years ago we started working with a group of law firms from the UK and US and created the LTC4.”
The LTC4 examined how users in law firms work, and identified the related business and user goals. Using this information they were able to define standard core competencies in the use of technology.
The competencies identified were organized into common workflows including:
Once the competencies and associated workflows had been established by the Coalition, Capensys built the KnowledgeCheck system to provide a framework to deliver all of the resources, tutorials and exercises a firm would need to establish a core competency program.
KnowledgeCheck also supplies CLE/CPD-accredited tutorials for these core competencies, where applicable.
The curriculum is delivered via e-learning tutorials and exercises which can be imported in to a firm's own Learning Management System (LMS), or can be hosted on the Capensys LMS. Users are assigned the competency workflows relevant to their role within the firm, and are asked to complete task- based scenarios. Based on the results, certification can be awarded or further learning assigned to the user. Progress is tracked and measured using the firm's LMS, or through the Capensys LMS.
The structure of the KnowledgeCheck certification system provides a less stressful environment for both the users and those who implement the up-skilling initiative. It incorporates a “personal best” philosophy that encourages and motivates learners to participate without the anxiety associated with “assessments.”
