Stringent Certification Award Provides Additional Level of Security for the Electronic Exchange of Legal Documents
Biscom, provider of the legal industry’s most trusted document exchange technology, today announced that it has completed the rigorous FIPS 140-2 testing and has received certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
FIPS 140-2 is a U.S. government security standard that accredits cryptographic modules. Working in conjunction with the Communications Security Establishment (CSE), the FIPS 140-2 validation program is also recognized in Canada. FIPS 140-2 certification is part of the Biscom Secure File Transfer solution that enterprises use to share confidential and sensitive files and documents.
“The recently enacted HIPAA Omnibus Rule now imposes the same level of compliance and enforcement on business associates, including law firms, as the health care providers they represent,” according to Charles Magliato, Biscom’s Legal Program Director. “This includes securing the transfer of protected health information. Biscom Secure File Transfer has been successfully deployed in law firms to secure the transfer of confidential data. Our FIPS 140-2 certification now provides safe harbor for HIPAA-related data exchange.”
While the U.S. government requires applications that use cryptography to be FIPS 140-2 certified, many other industries such as health care, financial services and the legal field also consider FIPS 140-2 certification a requirement before they deploy an application that uses encryption.
