Clio's 2024 Legal Trends Report: How AI, Flat Fees, and Technology Are Transforming Law Firms
Global News

Clio logoClio, the leading provider of cloud-based legal technology, has released its ninth Legal Trends Report, highlighting key developments in the legal industry. This year’s report focuses on the rapid adoption of AI, the rise of flat fees, increased investment in technology and marketing, and ongoing challenges in client intake.

According to Clio’s CEO, Jack Newton, 79% of lawyers now use AI daily, a level of adoption that cloud technology took a decade to achieve. AI is streamlining tasks like data analysis and information gathering, with up to 74% of billable work now exposed to automation. This efficiency is prompting firms to shift toward flat fee billing, which better aligns with the value provided rather than time spent. Flat fee billing has risen by 34% since 2016, with 71% of clients preferring this model over hourly billing.

The report also shows that firms investing more heavily in technology and marketing are seeing significant returns. Software spending has grown by 20% annually since 2013, outpacing revenue growth, which has increased by 9%. Firms that focus on technology and marketing have reported a 21% increase in profitability, with solo practitioners rapidly increasing their technology investments to remain competitive.

However, client intake remains a challenge for many firms. A 2024 secret shopper study revealed that only 33% of law firms responded to emails, and 40% answered phone calls—both declines from 2019. Firms that improved their client intake processes, especially by adopting online tools, saw a 50% increase in new clients and revenue.

The report also highlights the role of chatbots in client engagement, with 51% of clients finding them useful. However, 67% of clients still prefer speaking with a human, indicating that firms should balance technology with personal interaction to meet client expectations.

Overall, Clio’s Legal Trends Report provides valuable insights into how AI, flexible billing, and technology are shaping the legal industry, offering actionable strategies for law firms to stay competitive and enhance client engagement.
